Vincentia High received $909,009 under the third round of the federal government’s Trade Training Centre Funding. It will be used to build an industrial standard kitchen for hospitality students.

Mr Voysey said high school students would share the facility with people from the Bay and Basin area who might not be able to access hospitality courses in Nowra.

TAFE NSW is one of the project partners. It might play a role in teaching the high school students and run courses at night for the wider community.

Mr Voysey said the new facility would be an important asset for the school.

The existing facility, which Mr Voysey said could be described as a domestic kitchen, was not up to standard.

“The students do their work placements in industrial standard kitchens,” he said.

Even a standard dishwasher was different to an industrial kitchen’s dishwasher, he said.

Mr Voysey said going from the school’s domestic kitchen into an industrial standard kitchen could be daunting for students.

He will meet with department representatives within a month to get more details – including a start date for construction.

He hoped construction would start early 2011 and the realistic completion date would be later in the same year.

He said the prospects for the new facility were exciting and with the school’s breakfast club being expanded the opportunity to establish some sort of restaurant at the school could be an option in the future.

Another facility, for construction students, could be built in the future.

Federal Member for Gilmore Joanna Gash said she was delighted that after two failed attempts Vincentia High would finally get a boost to its training services for young people.
